A few years of this continued on, some progress, but never enough to free up my time or allow me to stop to catch my breath. Then one Saturday morning towards the end of April, I got out of bed and did what most of us do routinely first thing in the morning, head for the bathroom. I had been a little under the weather for a few days, but I actually felt like I was getting better when I woke up that morning. I had a number of clients to see, and even a prospect to visit that afternoon. But I digress, I just barely made it out of the bedroom and into the hall, when I just had to sit down on the floor and quickly.

I couldn’t catch my breath, literally; I couldn’t breathe.

Fortunately, Nicole was at least semi-awake and realized I was sitting on the hallway floor and came to check on me.

I of course insisted that it was no big deal and asked her to take me to the walk-in; that is when I finally was able to get to the car, which she had to pull up onto our lawn in front of the steps, so I wouldn’t have to walk quite as far. The people at the walk-in looked at me like I was insane and told me to go to the emergency room immediately.

Hospitalized And Still Working


Needless to say I ended up hospitalized with pneumonia at 32 years old and had to spend a week their; not an easy thing for someone who doesn’t stop, ever. Even then I was sitting in a hospital bed, with an oxygen mask, laptop in hand working; trying to figure out where things went wrong. Trying to figure out how to get my business back on track.

Invincible or Clueless?

Even with not being able to breathe, even with being hospitalized and on oxygen for a week, it didn’t really occur to me just how much my life was in danger, until early August of this year when I was driving to a restaurant with Nicole, and we heard on the radio that Bernie Mac had died from pneumonia at age 53. As we discussed it, I could hear in her voice, just how scared she had been. At that moment, I knew what I had put her through, I’m sure she spent those nights alone at home, wondering if I would return; probably tucked into the covers with Bailey (our rottweiler/german sheperd) providing at least some company. It finally dawned on me just how close I had come to death. Yes, it was scary not being able to breath, but only now do I fully appreciate what WE went through.

For the last few years I had worked long and hard to make sure that my next business venture would go more smoothly; without draining the life out of me; literally.
